The Smithsonian Magic Rocks Kit is a classic hands-on STEM science experiment that lets children grow a colorful underwater crystal garden.
How It Works & Description
- The Science: Metallic salt rocks react when dropped into a solution of sodium silicate (water glass) dissolved in water. This chemical reaction causes colorful, branching stalagmite-like towers to sprout upward.
- Growth: Crystals begin forming within 10 minutes and can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall.
- Colors & Variety: The stones develop into assorted vibrant colors (including red, pink, blue, purple, yellow, and white).
- Age: Recommended for children ages 10 and up (some kits list ages 8+).
What is Included in the Kit
- Aquarium Tank: A clear plastic container to display the growing crystal garden.
- Magic Rocks & Solution: Colored metal salt stones and sodium silicate solution (or packets to mix with warm water).
- Theme & Decor: A space-themed backdrop print and a sticker sheet for decorating the tank.
- Educational Guide: Instructions and STEM learning material explaining the chemistry of crystal formation.
